           DEVELOPMENT - THE RADIAL APPROACH   Though differentiation and integration are always intimately related in experience they comprise uniquely distinct processes that require corresponding distinct methods of intellectual interpretation. In the radial approach every stage entails a unique configuration of both differentiation and integration, with the precise relationship between both determining the very nature of the stage. This leads to a significant reinterpretation of key development issues and an overall appreciation that is much more accurate in terms of experiential dynamics. Fundamental Polarities Q You lay great emphasis on the importance of three sets of polarities which condition all phenomenal development. Can you briefly elaborate?   PC The notion of fundamental polarities that condition all phenomenal experience is not new. One mystical tradition where it is greatly emphasised is that of Taoism. (A corresponding Western expression can be found in the writings of Nicholas of Cusa). However they play an important role in all the major traditions where attachment to polar dualities is seen as a key barrier to pure spiritual awareness. A particularly interesting example of their significance can be found in modern physics where in quantum mechanics the subject/object duality plays a key role.   Vertical Polarities: Holism and Partism We now look at the vertical aspect of development relating to whole and part (and part and whole) polarities, again with reference to the relationship as between atom, molecule, cell and organism. Perhaps this is especially important as we customarily think of stage development in a somewhat vertical fashion i.e. from "lower" to "higher" stages. However once again as in dynamic interactive terms the whole is related to the part and the part in turn related to the whole, when we attempt to differentiate in (linear) asymmetrical terms, two interpretations are equally valid. A holon is customarily interpreted as a whole that is part of another whole. However this is just one arbitrary interpretation where the polar frame of reference is fixed with the whole aspect.
